Hi y'all,
Well today my long run turned into something really fun and special. According to schedule I had to run 13km but since I had accepted the Runkeeper Global5K challenge I also had to do a 5km. So I decided to break up the run and stop my app at the 5k point and restart it again to log the other 8k. And so I did.
Now there is something oddly satisfying about running a virtual event with people from all over the world. It started out with the updates I received featuring charts of participants per country. When the Netherlands dropped to 4th place I couldn't believe it. How can a country that small with about 17 million people in it host the biggest running event in the WORLD known as the Dam-tot-damloop...even beating the NYC marathon but drop to 4th place in the virtual world? So I got busy tweeting & facebooking trying to motivate people to actually join in and than I got more excited too.
Just looking up the hastag #Global5K and using it myself was so much fun. I got a few really good retweets and likes and reactions. Than this morning the best reaction ever came from my husband. As we were about to go outside to run I told him you don't have to run it, you can also bike or walk the 5k and that is when he decided to track his bikeride (he rides along on my long sunday runs) in runkeeper! His very first activity was going to be that Global5K. How cool is that? Super!!
Today we took the same route we take when I go for anything over 10km and so we ran De Bretten. At the 5K point we stopped to log the run and take some pictures. And than I noticed an explosion of updates on my phone. It is just amazing to see so many runner's out there running today and logging that 5K. As I restarted my app to log my other 8K that was scheduled I felt this strangely fun feeling of running an event without the crowds that come with it but still part of something big happening out there. Me, the love of my life and all these other amazing people somewhere out there...some first timers, some regulars and some veterans. It boosted my run and kept a huge smile on my face.
Honestly? I loved it and I truely hope that Runkeeper adds another Global event soon. How about a GlobalXmasRun that allows you to pick a distance....5k & 10k? I would be game. How about it y'all??
As always, until we read again,
Love, Marlies
